Submitted by: Homer M. Cho

Are you worried on how to keep your grandparents or elderly parents safe at home? To learn more about elderly care and ways of keeping them safe inside your house, read the article below.

Caring for elderly people is not that simple because they have special needs that require careful consideration and understanding. Aside from providing them nutritious food, care and love, you need to keep them safe always, especially when you are at work or out of your house.

Tips on how to keep your elderly loved ones safe at home:

– You should remove things which can cause them to fall or to slip like loose wires, rugs and loose electrical cords. Be sure to examine inside the house and to keep away all possible trouble items. Avoid waxing the floor because it could also cause slippage and fall. If you want to make changes on your flooring, replace slippery floors with tacked down carpet.

– Make sure that you have stable handrails in your stairs if you live in a multi-level house with stairs. Investigate and assess if your handrails are not loose or shaky, otherwise, hire a carpenter to fix them immediately and to stabilize all the shaky handrails inside the house.

– Secure your bathrooms and make sure that your showers and bathtubs are slip-proof, otherwise put some bath mats. Install handrails in the showers and bathtubs to help them get in and get out easier.

– Do not put regularly used and necessary items in top shelves to avoid slippage and fall when they are trying to reach them. Make sure to place them just around the corner. If ever you place things on top shelves, be sure to have a step stool in place.

– Make sure that there is adequate lighting in all areas of the house, especially in hallways and in areas which are frequently visited by members of the family. Adequate and proper lighting are needed to elderly individuals who have cataracts and diabetes problems. You can clean your existing lighting fixtures or replace defective bulbs. Place furniture pieces near outlets to ensure that electric cords are out of the way. If possible, install additional wiring to limit the distance between the appliance and the outlet. You can also opt for occupancy sensor light switch, a device that automatically turns on when there is movement.

– Be cautious and beware of hazards caused by heating system. Elderly people are highly vulnerable to gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning because they spend majority of their time inside the house. To ensure their safety, make sure to have your home checked by professional heating systems technician regularly. Install a carbon monoxide detector inside the home to detect if it is already in its dangerous level. Research shows that carbon monoxide has been the primary cause of accidental deaths among older people.

– Check your furniture pieces regularly and make sure that they are all firm and safe to avoid accidents from happening. Do not give them beds with elevated platforms to prevent falls. Check for any signs of unstable furniture items, like broken legs of chairs. If you spot any furniture defects, have it repaired or have it replaced immediately.

– Make sure to keep toxic products like detergent liquid and chlorine in separate and safe storage areas because of the possibility that they may confused them with condiments due to their blurred vision.

By following all the tips and suggestions above, you can be sure that your elderly loved ones are safe in your house.

UK Secretary of State for International Development and deputy Labour leadership candidate Hilary Benn, has criticised US President George W. Bush’s ‘war on terror‘ concept in a speech given to the Center on International Cooperation, a US think tank.

Benn’s speech argued that the phrase ‘war on terror’ should be deprecated because it can’t be won by military means alone as well as indicating that the ‘war-on-terror’ concept may have actually assisted terrorist groups by giving them a sense of belonging.

Six ministers in radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr‘s Sadrist Movement have resigned from the Iraqi government, because Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki did not push for a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.

At a press conference, the head of Sadr’s parliamentary bloc Nassar Rubaie, read a statement from al-Sadr:”Considering the public interest, we found that it was necessary to issue an order to the ministers of the Sadr bloc to immediately withdraw from the Iraqi government,” The statement continued, “The six ministries shall be handed over to the government itself, hoping that this government would give these responsibilities to independent bodies who wish to serve the interests of the people and the country.”

Al-Maliki was happy the Sadrists respected the political process. The move could have threatened to topple his government, but so far the Sadrist Movement is still part of the ruling coalition.

Investigations undertaken by an undercover journalist, unearthed corruption, intimidation of staff, as well as exposing issues concerning availability of drugs within HMP Rye Hill prison in Warwickshire, a class B facility which is privately run. The investigative journalist finds staff living in fear of their lives and a massive black market in the prison which is run by GSL Group. The company countered that the undercover reporter, did not follow his training as a guard.

Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Alistair Darling said that some MPs have called for the scrapping of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). His statement came as a survey of 145 firms found that only 8% saw the DTI playing an important role. He has, however, said that DTI needed to continue for nuclear decommissioning.

A survey of British by the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) found that British companies feel it more difficult to start and grow a business today than ten years ago. On a positive note, of the top 750 European companies, UK companies generated a third of total profits.

According to Russian officials, Transneft and Transnefteprodukt(TNP) are to merge. The merger will create a “single network of oil and oil products via the pipelines and protect the economic interests of the Russian Federation,” according to a Kremlin Statement. The move would give the companies concerned more power internationally, say analysts.

President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree, approving the merger. The Russian government would keep a 75% ownership stake in the combined firm. The merger of firms is to be complete in five months.

For the third time in a month, the United States has requested information about a missing former FBI agent believed to be in Iran. The State Department says Robert Levinson went missing while visiting Kish Island in March. He is retired and is said to have been there on his own business interests.

Iran’s previous responses have been to request more information about Levinson. Each time, the inquiries went through Swiss diplomats.

India proposes ban on commercial surrogacy

Friday, August 26, 2016

Indian foreign minister Sushma Swaraj announced on Wednesday a draft law to ban commercial surrogacy in the country. Commercial surrogacy is where a person or couple pay another woman (the surrogate) to carry a pregnancy for them. The new proposed law will allow only infertile couples who’ve been married five or more years to use a surrogate to conceive, on the condition that the surrogate is a close relative of the couple’s.

The proposed ban will prevent single women, foreigners, non-resident Indian nationals, and the LGBTI community from accessing surrogacy services.

Minister Swaraj was quoted in the Indian Express newspaper saying, “we do not recognise live-in and homosexual relationships … this is against our ethos,” adding that Indians living overseas would be banned as “divorces are very common in foreign countries”.

The draft bill will now go to parliament for approval. If approved, minister Swaraj said the ban on commercial surrogacy would come into affect 10 months after passing parliament, allowing for women already in commercial surrogacy arrangements to give birth.

Experts in surrogacy have criticized the proposed law, saying that a complete ban on commercial surrogacy will simply force ineligible couples into illegal surrogacy arrangements. India is one of few countries in the world that currently allows commercial surrogacy. In 2012 the United Nations estimated that there are over 3,000 fertility clinics in India, generating approximately $400 million USD a year from commercial surrogacy.

By Lanbo Jiang

“Employee welfare improving year by year, various labor and social security insurance rates are constantly expanding, and now we can do a good job factory workers a month to get 23 thousand dollars.

Although the company provided more favorable conditions , but still move enough workers. “yesterday, the U.S. Island Clothing Co., Ltd. Public Relations Department is responsible for Zhou Jianguo tell people they encountered in the recruitment on the embarrassment. “At present, our company leaving a shortfall of 120 to 150 people, as the industry’s own characteristics, personnel mobility also affects the stability of human resources, the company is expanding production scale, once a new plant to be put into production, our demand for workers increased year by year , can be said that finding workers shortage to some extent restricted the size of the company to expand and grow. “US-Island HR department head I am very worried about Fang. US-Island employees benefits the company in improving on a lot of effort, because employees are more mobile, they have taken is that staff can be insured for half a year into the factory system, and some weak sense of self-protection of migrant workers, they take the initiative to promote This year in July, the company organized a one-time to the 200 social security, this year will be a further expansion of surface.

However, these measures are not necessarily effective. Yu-fang said: “A few years ago, our company has not insured the mobility of employees, benefits and social security to become a bargaining chip to attract them, along with relevant state departments have intensified their propaganda to promote awareness of workers rights protection strengthened Many businesses in this area has improved, and now the benefits have been difficult to retain our staff. garment enterprises on the one hand it is hard to move, on the other hand, it is difficult to stay. “Textile & Garment Industry Association, Yu-Hua Zou, said:” Not only U.S. Island, a clothing company faced with such problems in the city, the textile and garment industry is generally difficult to recruitment difficulties.

In recent years, the city had a lot of clothing and textile businesses to improve the treatment of workers on to a number of ways to do may give employees a better work environment and more secure benefits, but the phenomenon has been enough local workers and are present difficult to get a fundamental solution. “city labor department of the people: now, the city’s labor-intensive industries have different There has been an issue of recruitment difficulties, textile and apparel companies in particular.

Textile recruitment difficult because in many ways. Macro that rapid economic development will inevitably bring surge in demand for labor. The rapid development of private economy, job growth in demand much faster than the natural growth rate of labor force. Specific to the city, with the export of labor services in recent years, increasing the degree of local labor force decreased; a small number of textile enterprises bankrupt, workers have to find another job, a huge loss of skilled workers. Meanwhile, over the years the rapid development of the city’s garment, textile and garment industry is relatively more intense, sometimes overtime, many young women do not want to select the textile, clothing and other labor-intensive types of work large, but is willing to enter low labor intensity and type of service industries, textile and apparel industry has also created a certain impact on recruitment.

Now, the city textile and garment manufacturers to ensure the majority of monthly income of ordinary employees in more than 700 yuan, the wage level of migrant workers have gradually lost their appeal. In addition, with increasing child, its hard work and diminishes. Practitioners in the past concentrated in the age of 20 years old, and now this age many young people in college, reading technical school, has embarked on a community, are also many would like to seek a clean, easy little of significant diversion of labor. In addition, the new launched the textile and garment production and distribution companies are more and more demand than supply for human, but also gaps in the labor force increased.
